Anthropology & Archaeology Images: Smithsonian and Los Angeles County Museums

The Anthropology Department has various online images available. Visit their Online Exhibits page for access.

Here are the a few of the most extensive online exhibits listed, as of March 20, 2015.

Web Portal to the John P. Harrington Collection
Harrington was a linguist who studied North American native languages during the first half of the 20th Century. The collection includes 200 sound recordings, 3,500 photographs, and nearly 600 artifacts. Many of these items have been digitized.

African Voices A Permanent exhibition that uses the musuems African artifacts. Images here are part of the exhibition geared for the lay public. The Focus Gallery section hosts various smaller exhibitions. 

Ainu: Spirit of a Northern People
Visually oriented, digital exhibit on the Ainu people of northern Japan.

Benedicte Wrensted: An Idaho Photographer in Focus 
Danish born photographer who worked out of Pocatello Idaho photographing Native American people from 1895-1912.

Expeditions - 150 Years of Smithsonian Research in Latin America 
"Nearly 100 artifacts, photographs, original documents, and rare books . . . are represented on this bilingual site.


 

Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County

This museum has numerous images from their Anthropology collections available online. 

Go to the Anthropology Collections page and use the search boxes there. 

  1. Use the drop-down menu labeled "Group/Inventory" to see the various collections. Highlight one that is of interest.
  2. Check the box at the bottom labeled "Show results only with images."
  3. Click Search.

You will get thumbnail images with information about the item. Each of  the first two collections had hundreds of images each. 173 images of Navajo Textiles, and 264 images of Central and South American Featherwork.
