Book Emergency 911

The book I want is not available in Tutt and I can't wait for Prospector or ILL.

Search the catalogs of UCCS Library or Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD)

It's 5AM and I need one more book for my paper.

Try Google Books -- the book you need may have full or partial viewing.

The popular book for my class is sold out at the Worner book store.

Check out Poor Richard's Book Store just down the street on Tejon.

Looking for a Composer?

If you want to find works by a composer, do an AUTHOR search in the Tiger catalog.  This will bring up anything she has created (scores, recordings, writings, etc).

If you want to find out about a composer, do a SUBJECT search.

Many contemporary composers have websites with sound files and biographical information.

Call Numbers Place Like Items Together!

Books on the same topic and scores for the same performance forces often have similar call numbers.

Once you find a good book or score in the stacks, browse the shelves for similar items.  You may also use the Browse function in the online catalog, to see what's nearby.

For a complete list of call numbers for music books and scores check out M is for Music!

  • WorldCat lists library holdings nationwide

  • Prospector: 3-5 business days
  • WorldCat (Interlibrary Loan): 5-10 business days

Keyword Searching

                        Using AND/OR/NOT (Boolean Search Operators)

AND

Use AND to focus search and combine different aspects of your topic.

Example: vegetarianism and environment
OR

Use OR to expand your search and find synonyms/related terms.

Example: global warming or climate change

NOT

Use NOT to exclude a word or phrase from your search

Example: emissions trading not United States

Additional Search Tips

"Phrase search"  - Use quotation marks (" ") to search for a particular phrase.

Example: "greenhouse gas emissions"

Truncation * - Use an asterisk to find variations of a word. Put an asterisk following the root of the word to find all variations of that word, including singular and plural.

Example: environment* (finds environments, environmental, environmentalist, etc.)

(Grouping/Nesting Keywords) - Use parentheses ( ) as a way to group all your search terms together.

Example: (climate change or global warming) and population growth
