MU158/AS158 Experiencing Asia through Music & Art: Find Scores

Notation vs. Oral Tradition

One musician's comments from Mixolydianblog.

Finding Scores

Scores of world music are much rarer than those of Western art music, due to the fact that world musics are transmitted aurally rather than being notated.

To find what we have in the Tiger catalog use a WORD search, such as China and music* and modify search your results by material type, selecting scores in the dropdown box. These examples are often "inauthentic"-- that is, they are an attempt to affix an aural art into a foreign notational system--or--they are works intentionally created in the Western art music style.
